Marek Švestka

  • Marek Švestka was born on 14.1.1985 in Střelice near Brno into a family of musicians. His father played the violin, his mother the piano. His three siblings are also involved in music professionally.
  • From the age of four he learned to play the violin and then the classical guitar. He learned to play the double bass at the age of nine. He completed his basic musical education at the Jaroslav Kvapil Music School in Brno in the double bass class of Karel Malana. He then studied at the Brno Conservatory from 2000 to 2006 with Prof. Martin Šranek. During his studies at the conservatory he won many awards. For example, he won the 1st prize twice at the Conservatory Competition in the 1st and 2nd categories, the 1st prize at the František Simandl International Double Bass Competition in Blatná and two years later the 2nd prize at the same competition in the 2nd category. He was also selected for the European Union Youth Orchestra, with which he toured European countries (Italy, France, Slovenia, Poland, etc.).
  • In 2006 he started studying in the double bass class of Prof. Miloslav Jelinek at the Brno JAMU.
  • He successfully completed his studies in 2012. During his studies he attended master classes with a number of prominent teachers (Prof. Klaus Trumf, Prof. Miloslav Gajdoš, Prof. Jiří Hudec, Prof. Irena Olkiewic, etc.). At the same time, he has won numerous awards at national and international competitions. Since 2013 he has been continuing his doctoral studies at the JAMU in Brno.
  • Since 2006 he has been a member of the Brno Municipal Theatre Orchestra. He also participates in the organisation of concerts of the Brno Double Bass Orchestra. In 2013 he took up the position of the leader of the double bass group of the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra.
  • In 2018, he toured Japan as a member of the Baborák Ensemble, Radek Baborák’s string quintet. In the same year, he began teaching at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno as an assistant to Prof. Miloslav Jelínek.
